9. PRO-based initiation of clinical interventions

Summary

To maximize the clinical benefit of PRO assessment, PRO data should be used appropriately to guide communication and the initiation of clinical interventions.

  • Clarify key aspects during planning by defining priorities regarding clinical relevance, available interventions, and related responsibilities.
  • Verify and contextualise PRO data before acting by incorporating the patient perspective and needs into decision-making.
  • Ensure visible consequences of PRO data by discussing them with patients even if they do not lead to further intervention.

Possible clinical workflow of integrating PRO data:

  1. Patient completes PROM(s)
  2. PRO data are analysed and interpreted by HCPs
  3. HCP/patient discussion of relevant PRO data and interventions
  4. Initiation/adaptation clinical interventions
  5. Monitoring/evaluation of outcome(s)

By developing pathways for relevant PRO data, the initiation of clinical interventions can be standardised, evaluated and optimised (see also chapter 6 implementation of PRO assessment in clinical practice).
