PRO-based initiation of clinical interventions
Using PRO data effectively: key principles
Consider in advance which PRO-assessed issues or symptoms require action and can be meaningfully addressed with interventions in the specific setting. Not all issues warrant immediate intervention (e.g. social support provision during aftercare).
Specify which interventions…
- are available and can be used with or without adaption
- are not available but needed (e.g. based on scientific evidence)
- can (realistically) be initiated.
It should be clear who…
- receives and reviews PRO data
- discusses PRO data and possible interventions with the patient
- initiates and carries out the clinical interventions
- evaluates the outcome(s) of clinical interventions.
Review PRO data with the patient to ensure shared understanding and to rule out reporting or interpretation errors.
Use shared decision‑making to align interventions with the patient’s situation, preferences, and daily-life impact.
Use additional PROMs, diagnostics, or professional assessments when indicated.
Even without immediate intervention, discuss PRO data with patients to acknowledge their input, support self‑management, and sustain motivation for PROM completion.
Aspects of deployment within implementing PRO assessment are addressed in Chapter 6.
