7. Interpretation of Patient-Reported Outcome data

What you need to consider when choosing an interpretation approach

Electronic PRO assessment offers options to facilitate the interpretation of PRO data by:

  • automatic calculation of scores
  • integration of thresholds of clinical importance, reference values, normative data, or PRO score interpretation thresholds
  • colour coded graphic display of results

Choice of interpretation approach

depends on: goals of PRO assessment, setting, target groups, assessment time points (single/repeated), as well as the available approaches for the selected PROMs (see chapter 4 for more information). It might be useful to choose different approaches for interpretation.

Possible uses of interpretation approaches in clinical practice:

  • individual data: optimisation of supportive therapy
  • group-level data: quality ensurance/management, expected impacts on quality of life
  • group‑level data  (e.g. fatigue differences between treatments): informing patients about the expected effects on quality of life and functioning, supporting shared decision-making.
