7. Interpretation of Patient-Reported Outcome data
What you need to consider when choosing an interpretation approach
Electronic PRO assessment offers options to facilitate the interpretation of PRO data by:
- automatic calculation of scores
- integration of thresholds of clinical importance, reference values, normative data, or PRO score interpretation thresholds
- colour coded graphic display of results
Choice of interpretation approach
depends on: goals of PRO assessment, setting, target groups, assessment time points (single/repeated), as well as the available approaches for the selected PROMs (see chapter 4 for more information). It might be useful to choose different approaches for interpretation.
Possible uses of interpretation approaches in clinical practice:
- individual data: optimisation of supportive therapy
- group-level data: quality ensurance/management, expected impacts on quality of life
- group‑level data (e.g. fatigue differences between treatments): informing patients about the expected effects on quality of life and functioning, supporting shared decision-making.
