Modes of PRO assessment for clinical application
Electronic PRO assessment (3): PROM software
There are many providers of PROM software. As it has to be integrated into the existing IT system, the selection of an adequate software requires the support of the responsible IT experts (e.g. the IT department of a hospital).
The selection of a PROM software should take the specific needs in the setting of its application into account.
The following aspects should be considered:
- interoperability with clinical information system, e.g. to support data transfer to electronic patient records
- backend administrability and configurability
- data storage and security
Access modalities
- user groups (patients, HCPs, administrative staff, quality management)
- access points (e.g. from clinic, home)
- technologies involved (e.g. supported devices like PC, tablet, smartphone, browser-based VS app, connectivity)
- procedure (e.g. process of log-in, identification, authentication)
PROM availability/adaptability
- already included PROMs
- options to add new PROMs (e.g. static or individually compiled PROMs)
- language(s) (e.g. of PROMs, interface)
- configurability of assessment times and frequency
Collection of PRO data
- PROM allocation to individual patients manual (e.g. by HCPs) or automated (e.g. by ICD-10 diagnosis, assessment time)
- mode of data entry (e.g. touchscreen, mouse click), interface easy and intuitive
- display of questions (e.g. one per page, option to skip, display of progress, font size adaptable)
- automated reminder for follow-up assessment (e.g. via mail)
Display and control of PRO data
- easy and intuitive interface
- graphic display of PRO data (e.g. single assessment, development,
- aids for interpretation (e.g. colour coding, thresholds)
- optional alerts for clinically relevant results (e.g. severe burden)
- completeness and plausibility check, option to correct data (e.g. mistakes during completion)
