Empowerment, self-efficacy, and adherence are key factors that enable patients to take control of their health, engage in proactive behaviours, and effectively manage their conditions, ultimately leading to a higher quality of life. Self-management support is associated with:
- better disease control
- better daily functioning
- fewer emergency department visits
- reductions in symptom severity for specific problems such as fatigue, pain, anxiety, and other treatment side effects
- reduction of psychological distress
