Patient self-management in oncology (basics)

Patients with cancer are exposed to a complex care system. (PRO-based) self-management can empower patients by building competencies that help them take an active role in care, feel more involved and in control, reduce the impact of disease, and maintain quality of life.

Self-management competencies describe patients’ ability to manage the challenges associated with their disease and treatment, including 


  • Proactively recognizing and managing disease-related symptoms and treatment side effects (e.g., fatigue, appetite loss) based on PRO-based self-assessment
