Implementation of PRO assessment in clinical practice
6. Train clinical staff
Once the workflow and infrastructure are ready, train the relevant clinical staff according to their needs so they can run the PRO process as intended.
How to
- introduce PROMs to patients (explain purpose, motivate, handle questions)
- manage data collection (e.g., assign PROMs to patients/groups)
- use ePRO software
- interpret PRO data (see chapter 7)
- use PRO-based clinical communication (see chapter 8)
- initiate PRO-based clinical interventions (see chapter 9)
- support PRO-based patient self-management (see chapter 10).
Training formats (can be combined):
- efficient for many
- enables immediate clarification of questions
- facilitates group discussion and peer learning (e.g. participants motivating each other)
- allows assessment of learning success
- organisation may be challenging (e.g. shifts, holiday, minimum staffing needed to keep up with routine)
- group dynamics (e.g. scepticism, hierarchy, social desirability)
